Bataan Gov. Joet Garcia met with Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo Loyzaga in Limay last Thursday to discuss more effectively steps to be taken to avert possible oil spill in the province following the sinking of motor tanker Terra Novo on July 24.
Loyzaga told reporters that as of July 25 there was evidence damage due to oil spill from the sunken Philippine registered vessel. According to DENR Bataan Director Raul Mamac, the gatevalve from the 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel remained sealed. “The oil slick seen by Coast Guard could have been fuel oil from vessel engine and not from the oil tank itself,” Mamac said.
Limay Vice Mayor Richie David said the municipal government has warned fishermen to refrain from fishing within the area until the water is cleared by the local environmentalist. Gov. Garcia said the owner of Terra Nova vessel has been notified about the incident.”Lahat tayo ay magtutulung-tulong para maiwasan ang hindi magandang pangyayaring ito, kasama ang LGUs at ibang ahensya ng pamahalaan,” said the governor.
